When choosing the material to use for your bespoke suit, you should consider what kinds of occasions the suit will be for and what kind of weather it will be worn in. The three most popular suit materials for ATL Tailor customers are:
Wool
Worsted wool is perhaps the most luxurious-looking option for suit lining. Unfortunately, it’s not breathable. It’s great for highly formal occasions like job interviews or political events, but it’s not great for walking around in, especially if you’re outdoors, because you might find yourself damp before you know it.
High twist plain weave is a thinner, more breathable wool. Although it doesn’t have the flexibility or sweat-wicking properties of other fabrics, it’s a great choice for wearing at outdoor events where you won’t be walking around much.
ATL also specializes in creating 100% superfine wool suits with linen or silk mixed into the fabric to make it a bit more breathable.
Linen
Linen has a slightly more casual look than wool when it comes to suits. This is thanks to the slight wrinkle that makes a linen suit look more like something your college professor would wear than something to take to a job interview.
Linen is also a fantastic material for wicking away sweat. Because of that, it’s very popular with our customers looking for something snazzy to wear outside during the damp Georgia summers.
Cotton
Cotton is the most casual-looking suit fabric. It also comes in a wider variety of textures and colors than other suit fabrics, which makes it a good option for “fun” or “casual” suits. For both of those reasons, cotton suits are better for wearing at a not-so-formal event like a country music show or a family reunion. People who want to look like a million bucks but don’t want to come off as overly-“stuffy” often request cotton at the start of their suit-making process.
Most cottons are good for warm weather, but there are certain types of cotton like corduroy or heavy brush that are good four-seasons fabrics.
Choosing a Lining Material
Then there’s also the lining to consider. The two types of lining ATL Tailor uses in their suits are:
Silk
A bit more luxurious-looking because of its glossy sheen, but not very breathable.
Bemberg
A synthetic cotton known for its softness and moisture-wicking properties.
